Our community has lost a wonderful human with the passing of Kerry Degrassi. For decades, Kerry dedicated her life to community development, social justice, and advocacy, leaving a lasting mark on Sorell and beyond.
Kerry played a key role in founding Dodges Ferry Primary School, Okines Community House and Southern Beaches Regional Arts (now South East Arts). She served tirelessly with the Dodges Ferry Volunteer Fire Brigade and Ambulance Service, where her husband George was a devoted volunteer until his passing in 2015.
Kerry served as a Councillor between 1996 and 2022, including a term as Mayor of Sorell in 1999-2000. She worked passionately for child protection, womenβs rights, and community welfare. Her impact extended to youth programs, the Tasmanian Womenβs Council, and as a founding director of the Bendigo Bank Community Bank in Sorell. Recognised for her lifelong service, Kerry was inducted into the Tasmanian Honour Roll of Women in 2008.
Kerryβs final Council meeting in October 2022 marked the end of more than 26 years of dedicated service to her beloved community. Her legacy will continue to inspire all who knew her.
From all at Sorell Council we send our love and thoughts to her children Danelle, Ben and their families.
Vale, Kerry Degrassi. Thank you for a lifetime of service. β€οΈ
