Seniors Week Events
Seniors Week is an annual event that provides an opportunity for communities to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions of older people to the community. Seniors Week is also a celebration of seniors’ active participation in community life and allows us to encourage older people to be active, participate in local events and socialise with their peers.
We listened to the feedback from our Seniors Advisory Group who told us they wanted Council to provide more activities for them. So for Seniors Week 2022 year we planned a range of activities to encourage people to try something new and interact with others in their community.
We partnered with local groups, businesses and people to support their work and showcase the wonderful facilities and talented people we have living and working in our community. We had approx. 100 seniors involved in our events across the week:
- Sip and Paint with local artist Jodi Chivers at Dunalley Hall.
- Luncheon at Iron Creek Bay with Mitch McPherson from Speak Up Stay Chatty as a guest speaker reminding everyone of the importance of talking about mental health. Mitch’s message was strong on celebration, and how talking about mental health can be challenging, but we need to celebrate how far we’ve come in this area.
- Men’s Breakfast at Sorell Memorial Hall hosted by Rotary Club of Sorell.
- A movie matinee at Sorell Memorial Hall hosted by South East Tasmania Salvos.
We also had a local fitness instructor lined up to run stretch therapy and chair yoga classes but unfortunately she was unwell and we had to cancel them.
